Art Therapy for Women's Program

At Austin Recovery, Art Therapy is used to assist clients in our women's program in processing aspects of their addiction and recovery that are often emotionally too overwhelming to discuss verbally. Art Therapy provides the client a means to project emotions onto an external object (the art) in a safe, controlled manner.

Art Therapy directives are created to assist people in putting their feelings on paper. What is drawn often goes deeper than what is said. Art Therapy has been proven to relieve depression and anxiety – two things that often come from a drastic change in someone’s life. Within the directives presented in our therapeutic group, clients are able to address difficult emotions regarding fears, loss, how they view support systems, higher powers, their recovery process, along with many other aspects that surface as they pursue treatment for addictions.

Art Therapy often creates avenues for the clients to express emotions and address situations blocking recovery and confront the fears that limit growth. Clients are able to gain insights to their process and apply these to their recovery process. Art allows them to express emotions, defining their creations and encourages them to find their voice. Discussing the experience further within their process group provides them with the opportunity to share more deeply and begin applying new insights and new skills to obtain new growth.
